My Story...
The idea of starting a business like Maternity Fair
came out of my own shopping frustrations. During my first pregnancy
there were few retail options available, and I consistently came belly to
belly with other expectant mom's wearing the same outfit. So, I
sewed a few outfits and managed to get by. For my second pregnancy,
eight years later, I had to start all over again. Friends and
relatives had already passed along their things. And, although the
shopping options were better, I simply didn't want to spend a fortune on
clothes I would wear for just a short period of time.
I happened to stop by a children's resale clothing
store and stumbled upon the one rack of maternity clothes at the back of
the store. I was thrilled! I paid regular visits to the store
during my pregnancy and was able to "splurge" on beautiful work
and casual clothes that were of good quality, yet affordably priced.
I asked myself at that time why no one catered just to expectant
women. The seeds of Maternity Fair were planted.
In the spring of 2002, before deciding to leave a
job in advertising that I enjoyed, I placed a bunch of classified ads
offering to buy used maternity clothes in good condition. From the
start the response was overwhelming, and all of the feedback I received
was positive. A few months later, Maternity Fair was born. The
shop opened for business on October 10, 2002. |
